Dejas balva.

Man nav grūti vērtēt.

MARIANS BUTKEVICS
ballet artist, teacher

Eye colour: brown and lively
Element of movement: plenty of them, every movement has a soul in it
Music for the moment: if contemporary music – Platons Buravickis – his ideas, philosophy, music

Dance award. We are hungry for it. This is how it’s been with rewards for dance before: they kind of exist, but also kind of not… Until now, we have always been aside. So this is such a significant event for the Latvian scene, I only support this idea and value this prize as something new and essential for the whole dance sector.. The fact is that young choreographers and performers do not always have the opportunity to fully carry through their ideas, in terms of place and organization. It would be also neccessery to have a new concert hall here in Latvia, where the focus would be the contemporary dance and dance performances in general.

Valuation. Personally I am guided by my own experience. It’s not hard for me to value. There are some things that you accept at first, but then somehow you feel that it is not what you would like to see both as a viewer and as a professional. What is important is the choreographer, what his/hers ideas are and how he or she wants to express them. Not everything is straightforward from the start – for example, in the modern and contemporary dance the inner philosophy counts more: you as the viewer are looking for the paths of the thoughts, you look in the depth and everything gradually becomes understandable.

Dance and profession. The dance in my life began quite early, it was already at the age of five, when I was in the kindergarden. Then I continued it further into the children’s dance group “Dzintarins” teached by Zinaida Zeltmane and with her grace I was directed into the Riga Choreography School. This beginning was quite hard – it was a very large and professional selection, and I was faced with a dilemma between the Latvian folk dance and the professional ballet art. Valentin Blinov, my teacher and, so to say, guru, strictly asked me to choose. So I chose the ballet. There were many challenges. At that time we attended almost every peace and we also had the opportunity to take part in classical performances. My first major teacher on the stage was Alfred Spura – I was dancing my first role in the “Nutcracker”… He said: “Boy, you’re on the stage, your eyes have to shine and you have to be bright.” With this I’ve associated the stage throughout my life, even in my further career. Yes – the stage requires personality. Talented people have to do a lot to reach their peak. But when it seems to have been achieved, hard work should not stop, there must always be the will to develop, to look for new roles and challenge in dance.
