The performance \u201cViy\u201d by Radu Poklitaru at the Latvian National Opera premiered in the spring of 2023. From the very beginning, a question arises: where is the line between the original text and its reinterpretation? Poklitaru and composer Oleksandr Rodin show us that no such boundaries exist. Gogol\u2019s \u201cViy\u201d seems almost unrecognizable here, yet the detailed libretto helps the curious viewer understand this transformation. Radu Poklitaru himself commented for Latvian media LSM: “It’s enough for the source material to be read by the director or choreographer. They decide how it manifests on stage.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Dimensions of Gogol’s \u201cViy\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this adaptation, Homa Brut’s beloved Vasilina and his separate, existing soul are introduced. Also, the Nobleman and Viy are identified here. The musical accompaniment features the ancient Australian musical instrument, the didgeridoo, as well as a “shamanic staff” and metal plates-bells. The costume designer, Dmytro Kuryata, also impresses with stylistic choices, as the images of the unclean spirits in the church take on shapes that are far from Ukrainian. The performance also features a massive 3D-mapped cube, transforming the setting into various spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The Cossacks are nowhere to be found in this ballet, but seminarians certainly are\u2014passionate young men and women whose movements reflect both inner conflict and bold youthful maximalism. The mix of experimental dance and physical theater is apparent, blending modern ballet elements with theatrical physicality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mysticism\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this performance, every viewer is likely to find their own unique symbol. For me, it was the movement of clock hands, which go in different directions, suggesting that time doesn\u2019t exist. The circle is a recurring motif\u2014Homa draws one around himself for protection, echoing Gogol\u2019s original story. Time feels cyclical, and events repeat, as Homa appears caught between two worlds\u2014those of the living and the dead. The performance exudes emotional intensity, with passionate scenes blending fantasy, seduction, and disorientation. It evokes reflections on the fleeting nature of life. Do we construct our own reality, or are we partly driven by repetitive patterns due to the limitations of our consciousness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It seems that the emotional component dominates in the performance \u201cViy\u201d. Emotions overwhelm the protagonist to the point where he becomes disoriented in both time and space, unable to distinguish between dream and reality. Homa engages in several passionate scenes with different women, including seductive movements with the Young Lady and advances toward his love, Vasylyna. These interactions, along with suggestive dances, contribute to the performance’s overall sensual and intense atmosphere, leaving a strong impression of heightened sexuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mysticism resonates in the musical accompaniment of \u201cViy\u201d, where Rodin\u2019s original additions to the symphonic orchestra create a magical atmosphere. The afterlife is delicately portrayed through movements, costumes, music, and small details like candles. In Ukrainian mythology, the candle symbolizes the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead. It is used in rituals such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals, marking significant life transitions and highlighting the thin veil between the two realms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The image of Homa Brut’s separate soul, dressed entirely in white, moving in sync with him, adds to the mysticism of the performance. In many ancient cultures, including pre-Christian Ukraine, white symbolized the afterlife, not black. Funerals were once attended in white garments. While choreographer Radu Poklitaru may not have intended to embed authentic Ukrainian meanings, the use of such imagery evokes these deep cultural associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seminarians’ movements and the interactions between Homa and the Young Lady often reach an avant-garde level of expressiveness. At times, one might forget the original story by Gogol, as this interpretation is deeply infused with romantic entanglements. What remains of Gogol\u2019s signature style is the pervasive mysticism. It is visible in the choreography\u2014when the Young Lady enchants Homa, controlling his every movement, or when the Nobleman manipulates Homa after the Young Lady’s death, as if juggling him with one hand. How do they achieve such mastery?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homa Brut is consumed by immense fear, which becomes the key to understanding the internal conflicts and psychological depth of the performance. Though the characters speak little, Homa prays in the second act, pondering what is worse: the fear of the devil or the fear of God. He doesn\u2019t choose between Light or Darkness; he is overtaken by fear. Initially, it may seem that this fear signifies weakness. But is it really so? How often do we feel fear: before an important event, fear for our own life and for our relatives, fear to be ourselves, even to express ourselves? However, embrace your light and dark side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second act of the performance may seem prolonged, but it cleverly mirrors the technique of \u201cretardation\u201d found in folk tales, a style Gogol partially adopted in \u201cViy\u201d. In this technique, an action is repeated three times before a resolution. Homa spends three nights in the church, and on the third, he perishes from his own fear. Thus, Radu Poklitaru successfully preserves this narrative element, emphasizing the gradual buildup of tension and fear, leading to Homa’s ultimate downfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the performance “Viy” by Radu Poklitaru, raises questions about a key issue: should contemporary art be international, completely detached from the realities of ethnocultural or war-related contexts? In Gogol’s novella “Viy” Kyiv is mentioned numerous times, and all events take place on Ukrainian soil: there are references to the national dish of dumplings, embroidered shirts, Cossacks, and the image of a true Ukrainian witch. In the performance we see a complete reinterpretation. Where trembita, drimba, basol, bugai, etc. can completely replace didgeridoo and others. The choice is vast. Additionally, Ukrainian mythology is rich in various spirit figures: mavkas, Lesovik, Chugayster, Vodyanik, and others. It is difficult to say what guided the authors of the performance in choosing costumes and masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are the authors obligated to bring elements of Ukrainian folk culture into contemporary art? No, probably not, even if the work is based on it. This question is more of a social and philosophical nature, and the answers will always be considered subjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
