In the spring of 2019, the first Latvian Dance Awards will be presented for achievements in 2017 and 2018. We asked the members of the jury to share their insights on the valuation process and their personal journey into the world of dance. The first to answer – the chairwoman of the jury, ballet artist and teacher Regina Kaupuza.

Turklāt mēs, žūrija, šogad to darām pirmo reizi un līdz ar to mēs cits citu tikai sākam iepazīt.

Mīlestība uz deju man neradās pēkšņi.

REGINA KAUPUZA: WE DESERVED THE DANCE AWARD LONG AGO!

Eye colour: greenish gray

Movement: pirouette

Music for the moment: Beethoven, Chopin, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel

Dance award. The award has been needed for a long time. There is a popular saying in Latvia: We deserved it long ago! Classic dance traditions are very old and powerful, dance productions have been plenty from a historical point of view. Latvian ballet school has influenced and formed global celebrities – we always mention Mikhail Baryshnikov, Alexander Godunov, Maris Liepa and many more. Not to forget the newer generation – Anna Laudere, Dace Radina… A lot of very talented people who dance and are the main dancers on different stages in the world. They bear the name of Latvia and we are proud of them. As the music world or any art has its excellences, dance has excellences too in terms of productions and dancers. But we are relatively fewer, that’s why we’ve been silent. And we are people of movements rather than speakers. But who else will do it if not us. And it’s a great pleasure to know that the Culture Ministry of Latvia has heard our voice and the ideas have become real.

Valuation. Valuation is not easy at all because all contenders have put a lot of effort into their work. The topicality, the individuality, the personality and the passion are the most important things for sure. If you want to see the show again, then it has worth it. If there is a work that passes by you, then first the question appears – maybe it’ you who don’t know something? Maybe you have to dig for something inside you first? Because it’s not a case of quick decisions: it is a very sensitive topic. Besides we, the jury, are doing this for the first time this year and thereby we are only getting to know each other. We all lived our own lives as different dance disciplines before the award, but at this moment the many genres are merging and we are obligated to get to know each other. So about the scale – there has to be a lot of analysis before saying yes or no.

Dance and profession. My love for dance didn’t pop out of nowhere. It came with the learning process, thanks to my teachers. Inna Baranovska, my first ballet school teacher, taught classical dance and she really was the teacher with a capital T . Like that, step by step my love for ballet formed. At the start I didn’t even know what ballet was. The next teacher who influenced my passion for dance, ballet and music was Valentins Blinovs who taught the character dance. He had a very bright personality and a very big individuality. Everyone was afraid of him but did what he said. And the character dance especially is linked with music. And that music captivated. The next teacher – Irena Strode, with whom I finished my studies, and at that time I already knew that dancing was what I really wanted to do. It came gradually, it wasn’t anything spontaneous, but I think it was the investment of the three teachers. And I guess I have to thank my temperament as well.
